Diane
Maxine Gordon, Democrat, was elected to the New York
State Assembly in 2000. Gordon represents the 40th Assembly District,
comprised of parts of East New York and the Brownsville communities.
Diane
was born in Hemmingway, South Carolina and grew up in the East New York
and Brownsville section of Brooklyn. She attended public school, went
to Clara Barton Vocational High School and is a New York City Technical
College graduate. Diane has three lovely daughters (Misha, Mireille,
and Helen), and had one son who is now deceased, her mother who lives
in Brooklyn, her father who is also deceased, and six sisters and one
brother.
Assemblywoman Gordon's community involvement began in 1985 when she
founded the Save Our Homes Organization of East New York. This organization
helped homeowners and businesses in the community to remain intact when
rehabilitation was taking place.
Her strong background in education and social services includes working
in a day care setting, teaching fifth and sixth grade students, and
serving as a senior citizen caseworker and community liaison.
Diane received her degree in Business Administration from New York City
Technical College in 1985, and is certified by the American Business
Institute in Business Mathematics.
Assemblywoman Gordon served on the Community School Board of District
19, was elected to the area policy board of Community Planning Board
5, and has been elected as New York State Committeewoman since 1996.
Diane is always ready to address her district's concerns, to include
funding for research, education, and treatment for HIV/AIDS, to improve
education for children and housing for senior citizens, and to meet
the future concerns and challenges that arise in a thriving and growing
community.
Assemblywoman Gordon is currently a member of the New York State Black,
Puerto Rican and Hispanic Legislative Caucus, the Puerto Rican/Hispanic
Task Force, the Legislative Women's Caucus, the Democratic Study Group,
and the Brooklyn Delegation of the New York State Assembly (Kings County).
