J.
Gary Pretlow, Democrat, was elected to the New York
Assembly in 1992, and re-elected in 1994 and 1996. In 1998 and 2000,
the Assemblyman was re-elected without a major party opponent. He represents
the 84th Assembly District, which includes Mount Vernon and Yonkers.
Assemblyman
Pretlow was born on August 27, 1949 in New York City and raised in Queens.
He currently resides in Mount Vernon. The Assemblyman has one son, James
Gary Pretlow II.
Assemblyman Pretlow received his degree in Business Administration from
Baruch College in 1972 and is a licensed stockbroker and insurance agent.
Before entering politics, Assemblyman Pretlow was the Manager of Accounting
for Bloomingdale's department store. In 1980, he joined The Limited,
a national retail company, as the Assistant Controller and in 1985,
started a partnership, Moncur-Pretlow & Company, a financial planning
and management-consulting firm.
During his first year in business, Assemblyman Pretlow was elected to
the Mount Vernon City Council and served until December 1992. During
his tenure on the City Council, Assemblyman Pretlow served as Chairman
of the Finance and Planning Committee and Chairman of the Capital Projects
Board. Also, as a member of the Urban Renewal Agency and Commissioner
of the Mount Vernon Housing Authority, Mr. Pretlow was instrumental
in bringing new affordable housing to Mount Vernon.
In the State Assembly, Mr. Pretlow currently serves as Chairman of House
Operations. Assemblyman Pretlow is also a member of the committees on
Ways and Means, Social Services, Cities, Racing and Wagering, Codes,
Insurance and the Assembly Steering Committee. Assemblyman Pretlow also
serves on the New York State Task Force on Auto Insurance. He is also
a member of the Black and Puerto Rican Caucus, an organization for which
he serves as treasurer. In addition, Assemblyman Pretlow is a member
of The Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators, and the New
York State Senate and Assembly Hispanic Task Force.
Assemblyman Pretlow is the recipient of numerous awards for 2001 to
date including: Westchester Board of Legislators Proclamation; Mount
Vernon Youth Bureau, Youth Service Award; and the Yonkers YWCA Trailblazer
in Government Award. In 2000, the Assemblyman was awarded the African-American
Chamber of Commerce Elected Official of the Year Award; Westchester
Entrepreneur Assistance Center Special Recognition Award; The Mount
Vernon Task Force on AIDS Appreciation Award; and the Institute for
Student Achievement Recognition Awarded. In 1999, Assemblyman Pretlow
received the Mount Vernon Democratic City Committee Distinguished Service
Award; Yonkers Community Mental Health Center, Dedicated Service to
Mental Health Award; Mount Vernon Boys and Girls Club Certificate of
Excellence and Recognition of Achievement Award; and the Collin Allen
Daycare Center Recognition Award.
