Michele
Titus was elected to the Assembly in a special election
on April 16, 2002. A life long resident of Queens, Assemblywoman Titus
represents the communities of South Ozone Park, Springfield Gardens,
Rosedale, Far Rockaway and Laurelton.
The
New York State Legislature is not unfamiliar to the Assemblywoman. After
law school, Assemblywoman Titus served as Chief of Staff to State Senator
Ada L. Smith and then Executive Director to the New York State Black
and Puerto Rican Legislative Caucus. Prior to her election, Assemblywoman
Titus was an attorney for the New York City Board of Education where
she specialized in special education law. Other legal experiences include
the Consumer Frauds Bureau of the New York State Attorney General’s
Office and the Integrity Bureau at the Queens County District Attorney’s
Office.
A product of her district, Assemblywoman Michele Titus attended the
local public schools and is a graduate of John Adams High School. She
then went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from
the State University of New York at Binghamton and a law degree from
Albany Law School. Assemblywoman Titus has been admitted to the New
York State Bar since 1994.
Her career is a demonstration of commitment to public service. Assemblywoman
Titus is dedicated to empowering her community and has received recognition
and awards from the local groups in the district she represents as well
as from the Woman Caucus of District Council 37.
Assemblywoman Titus is a member of the Assembly Committees on Children
and Families; Codes; Judiciary; Local Governments; Small Business; and
the sub-committee on Airports. She is also a member of the of the New
York State Black and Puerto Rican Legislative Caucus, Association of
Black and Hispanic Legislators, Inc., Woman’s Legislative Caucus,
New York State Puerto Rican/ Hispanic Task Force, New York State Trial
Lawyers Association and Council of Black Elected Officials.
The legislation authored by Assemblywoman Michele Titus demonstrates
her dedication to protecting the stability of her community. She has
introduced and supported policy that would mandate after school programs
in every public school, expand early childhood education, provide access
to quality healthcare, improve transportation, enforce environmental
protections and lower senior prescription costs.
Assemblywoman Michele Titus resides in Queens with her husband, Eric
DeBerry and their two children, Justin Eric DeBerry and Sydney Michele
DeBerry.
